Superior technology – Store and Forward vs. Pass-Through

Postini offers a unique and patented method of scanning in real-time and in memory.  All other MSP’s offer a ”Store and Forward” architecture that involves breaking the SMTP session inherent in email transactions. This is done in order to allow MSP’s to write all email (DHA attacks, Dos attacks, viruses and the good mail) to disk. The emails are then all scanned in series.

Store and Forward Issues
This system of writing every mail to disk causes several issues:

1. Increased latency - as no governance is in place for how long the “write to disc” process should take.
2. Privacy/Security – all company emails are written to disc and stored.
3. Delivery Guarantee – The MSP has taken ownership of the email and broken the SMTP session, thus should anything happen to the MSP or the email, it will be lost.

These issues have become extremely significant recently with a global increase of Spam of 67% since September 2006. Added to this image Spam means that Spam messages are now 50% heavier than normal text spam messages are. 

Store and Forward providers are suffering the same effects as in house systems and are not coping with these volumes.  We believe that by partnering with any other vendor this will certainly increase your risk of seeing latency periods.

Postini uses their patented “Pass-Thru” technology that allows a parallel proxy connection to be opened up in real-time between Postini and the recipient once Postini has received a good email.
